About Us

An engaged congregation that has been part of Southwest Roanoke for over 115 years, Trinity welcomes you to join us.  Join us as we give ourselves away for the gospel.  Join us as we worship.  Join us as we live in community together.  Join us as we love God and love neighbor.  All are welcome.

Our History

The deepest roots of Trinity, like many other Methodist Churches of the Roanoke Valley, reach back to the Six Point Big Lick Methodist Circuit of the 1850s.  One Point of the Circuit was withdrawn in 1883, becoming an independent charge.  It was organized as Roanoke Methodist Episcopal Church South, with a Charter Memebership of 87.  Four of these members later became charter members of Trinity and part of its new guiding force and the start of its rich history.  Sunday School and Church Services were held in the old Opera House over the City Market Building in 1891.  The regular pastor of Greene Memorial and a new pastor alternately preached to the new congregation.  The place of Worship changed after a few months to rooms in a building on the corner of Campbell Avenue and First Street.  National Business College also occupied the buiding at one time.  Two of Trinity’s early pastors were Adjutants for Robert E. Lee and Jubal Early.  The congregation occupied various temporary quarters until 1892 when the old St. John’s Episcopal Church on Second Street across from Green Memorial Church was purchansed.  This location proved to be an unfortunate one as the mother church soon purchased its present building, placing Trinity in its mother’s shadow.  The present Trinity Chuch building was completed under the spiritual guidance of Reverend Rumsey Smithson and later the Reverend Harry M. Canter.  It was consecrated by Bishop A. Coke Smith on July 12, 1903.

The Methodist Tradition

United Methodists believe in actualizing their faith in community — actions speak louder than words. The three simple rules are: “Do no harm. Do good. Stay in love with God.” Some beliefs we share with other Christians are the Trinity (God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit) and Jesus’ birth, death and Resurrection.

Our Mission & Vision

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
